Discipleship Should Not Be Frustrating

Today’s reading: John 10:1-10

I’ll be honest. I often become frustrated when I invite people to church and they do not come. I become especially irritated when they say they will come but don’t.

Today’s reading makes it clear that I need to get over that.

Jesus is the only one who can lead people through His gate. I must remember that.

As a disciple, I can lead people to the gate, but only He can pull them through it. My frustration over people not attending church is, actually, an impatience with God. It may be well-intentioned, but it is a sin, nevertheless. I must learn to be patient — with people and with God.

My main role as a disciple is to be the shepherd in today’s parable. Once God has assembled His sheep inside His gate, it becomes my job to lead them peacefully back out  into the world. If they trust me, they will follow. So I must earn their trust.

Thanks be to God for His magical gate.
