Joys Grow From The Darkest of Darkness

Today’s reading: Luke 15:11-24

I’ve known many people who have suffered from alcoholism or some other addiction for which there is a 12 step program. Being their friend has been heart breaking. Waiting helplessly as they fall to “the bottom” (which they all must do before hope can come for their recovery) is as frustrating and sad experience as there is in God’s world.

And every time I hear an inspiring story of such a recovery, I am reminded that I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing even one of my friends come back to life. In fact, one great friend of mine even committed suicide over his demons.

Nevertheless, the story of The Prodigal Son always gives me strength of hope.

It is my everlasting reminder that, God has a way of finally getting through to everyone. I know that all of my wayward friends will find happiness in God, and I will be able to join this story’s blessed father in his cries of delight.

“For this (friend) of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!’ And they began to celebrate.” (Verse 24)

Thanks be to God for the joy that always sprouts from a lost soul’s darkest troubles.
