God’s Body Deserve Eternal Respect

Today’s reading: 1 Corinthians 12:14-26

I woke this morning to a television news report showing comedians making fun of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his country’s threats to use nuclear weapons against its neighbors and even the United States.

I chuckled at the jokes.

Then I turned to today’s reading. And the jokes did not seem so funny anymore.

Say what we will about Kim Jong Un, he is a member of the human body. And North Korea is a member of the international body known as The United Nations.

So Paul’s words about the body are applicable:

“As it is, there are many members, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and those members of the body that we think less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our less respectable members are treated with greater respect; (Verses 20-23)

We may not understand the news that comes from Pyongyang these days. We may not like it or  appreciate it. And we may even fear it.

But, to honor God’s body, I believe North Korea and her leaders are deserving of respect. As with the members of any other body, we need them, and they need us. It’s important for us all to remember that.

Laughing at North Korea just does not seem appropriate to me. Especially when nuclear weapons, military stand-offs, and starving people are the topics at the center of the stories.

Thanks be to God for all of His body.
