Praising God is a Lifelong Joy

Today’s reading: Psalm 69:30-32

I am replacing the floor in about half of my house these days, and I’m very thankful for the help of a good friend who has already put in at least 8 hours of tough labor in exchange for a couple of pizzas and some breakfast migas.

He and I spent a good part of yesterday (Saturday afternoon) jamming out to the radio while we worked happily together on this project. It was a great day. We accomplished much. (Though we also discovered that this job is going to be even tougher than we thought, and my house is still at least 3 weeks away from normalcy! Such is life!)

But as I reflect on all this in light of today’s reading, I’m suddenly disappointed in myself over my choice of station for our “jams.”

When I headed for the tuner as we settled in for the work yesterday, my friend voiced no preference for the type of music. If I had been working alone, I would certainly have turned to KBNJ, my favorite station for up-beat contemporary Christian music. But, for some reason, I assumed my friend would rather hear some good ole’ rock-n-roll.  So I tuned to a great “Classic Rock” station that I am generally fond of. And, of course, the results were good. We both found ourselves “gettin’ down” with even a few episodes of air guitar  throughout the day.

But now I wonder why I assumed my friend would prefer this over the Christian station. He’s not a picky man. And he is a big fan of God, love and Jesus. We’ve had many talks about that before.

The fact is, I screwed up.

But today’s reading has set me straight.

“I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving.” (Verse 30)

Today, as my father and I embark on what’s become our regular Sunday drive to a church we’re becoming involved with 3 hours from home, I’m going to make sure KBNJ is turned up loud. I’m going to carry along some Christian CDs for when we’re out of range of the station. (Though I know we’ll be able to find another Christian station easily, too.) On our previous trips, Dad has never voiced any preference for the station we listen too, but I’ve always assumed he would rather listen to news programming than to Christian music.  Silly me.

Today, I’m going to assume that Dad, like me, is in a mood to just praise God for another glorious day of doing his work in the world.

Thanks be to God for everything!
