Christ is Our Eternal Will Power
Today’s reading: Romans 7:21-8:4
I have discovered that The World is wrong about the concept it calls “will power.”
Staying on a fitness program or a diet or a study routine is said to require this mysterious force, and everyone seems to have it except those who need it most. They are just out of luck until it finally comes their way.
Well, today’s reading points to another, less elusive, force that helps with the same problems. In fact, this force is the opposite of elusive — it seeks those who need it. No, wait. It is even better than that. It is always a part of those who need it. They just have to remember (or realize for the first time) that they have it.
Today’s reading describes this force.
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.” (Verse 1-2)
For the past few years, I have given up on “will power” to help me break bad habits. I now just remember Christ, which is already inside me.
And this strategy seems to be working. I have read more books in two years (including reading through the entire Bible twice) than I did in the last 15 years combined; I am now the skinniest and healthiest I have been in at least 20 years; and every day I go to bed thinking, wow, I did a lot of great work today.
Thanks be to God for His eternal power of goodness that runs through me always. May I always remember it’s my power too.
